About this Hike
Great Smoky Mountains National Park isn’t usually the first park that comes to mind when you say “epic.” Despite this, the Smokies offer some incredible hikes, some of the best in the eastern United States. Hiking to Mount Le Conte – one of the highest peaks in the park – is the pinnacle of these hikes.
There are many ways to reach Mount Le Conte, but the most popular is via the Alum Cave Trail. This trail sees lots of foot traffic, necessitating either an early-start or off-season visit to avoid crowds. The path winds through lush forests until reaching its namesake Alum Cave, a series of bluffs that provide an overlook of the mountains.
As you continue to Mount Le Conte, you’ll pass many beautiful views of the Smokies while navigating a sometimes-rocky trail. At Mount Le Conte, you can find two stunning overlooks: Cliff Top – popular for sunsets – and Myrtle Point – great for sunrises.
If you want to catch a sunrise or sunset at Mount Le Conte, consider going on a backpacking trip! The peak features the unique Le Conte Lodge – an overnight lodge offering meals that can only be reached by hiking – and a well-maintained camping shelter. Be on the lookout for black bears.
