About this Hike
Though every hike in Mount Rainier National Park is stunning, no other hike in the park offers views of its namesake peak like the trek to Mount Fremont. This somewhat-short hike leaves from the Sunrise Visitor Center and traverses Sourdough Ridge. Along the way, Mount Rainier is visible in all its massive size and glory directly in front of you.
Along Sourdough Ridge, you can catch stellar views of the surrounding Cascade Mountains and, if weather is clear, you can even spot Olympic National Park and Mount Baker. The hike ends at the Mount Fremont Fire Lookout Tower, which you can ascend for a satisfying view of Rainier’s northeastern slopes. Try to spot any of the numerous glaciers on the mountain’s slopes. If you have a pair of binoculars, see if you can spot a group of mountaineers!
I only recommend attempting this hike if the weather is clear. On a cloudy or foggy day, you likely won’t see Rainier much… if at all. July and August typically see the most consistently sunny weather in Washington, so I’d recommend planning your trip then. Check the weather forecast before venturing to the park, to avoid any chance of disappointment.
